Breaking the Code of Google and its Ranking Algorithm

Google is  single handedly responsible for securing the daily livelihood of hundreds and thousands of search engine optimizers around the globe.  A company which is close to twelve years old is more than dominating the entire internet with a simplistic search engine. Every passing year has seen its increasing dominance in every field and it is still unrelenting in development of newer applications. There are close to 180 million websites online and it is hard to imagine that their fate rests in the hand of a single engine, but the same is true. 71% of the total searches conducted in the world are made by using Google. This implies that the page-ranking of a website on Google will quite literally determining the fate of any website.

Any search conducted by Google goes through billions of documents and its algorithm is employed to determine the ranking of a page when the results are shown to the visitor. It is here that the role of search engine optimization finds place. While every site wants to get to the top, most end up unsuccessful. This is simply because all the SEO is done purely on intuitive analysis as Google’s algorithm parameters are unknown. The techniques are developed through scrutiny of the existing high ranking websites and discovering common factors. However, the complication does not end here. The algorithm is constantly evolving and rendering many techniques obsolete.

As the search engine rises in significance, the race for the ranking gets fierce. 300 million users conduct close to 2 billion searches using Google in just one day. The enormity of the number is sufficient to drive the necessity of optimization home, to even an amateur. While Google is holding on tight to its secret, it was revealed that there are 200 variables in the algorithm which together determine the rank and hence the future of any website. While many critics are going hoarse demanding a clear and unambiguous system with revealed parameters, Goggle is not listening. It is in a position to dominate and this has heralded a new phase in the war against the algorithm.

While the variables might be immense, it is certain that they will contain parameters related to domain, architecture, content, per inbound link, cluster of links, internal cross linking, penalties, JavaScript and No Follow links, speed of JS, XML sitemap and page rank. Within these there can be countless other sub categories which merge together to determine the eventual ranking which is presented to the user of the search engine. While the Google engineers are fiercely working towards the enhancement and streamlining of the algorithm, the SEO experts are equally at work, trying to break the code. It is a war being closely fought every day on the battlefield of the internet.

The Google ranking algorithm is still beyond breaking, yet a few simple things are clear from its working. At the end of the day, it is the site and its structure and content which determine the outcome of the rankings.

While the code still leads the way, the battle just turned into an all out war between a green, red and yellow search engine against millions of webmasters and thousands of SEO experts.
